Welcome to the 9th Underground Cinema Film Festival
A champion of emerging filmmakers, Underground Cinema has the belief that no matter what the film’s budget or the director’s vision it’s the filmmakers passion that drives a film.
As technology allows greater access to short films as well as filmmaking tools, an increasing number of people are turning to short filmmaking as a form of expression and an opportunity to explore creative freedom. The fact that we received 400 more submissions in this category than last year speaks to that. Within them we saw a wave of truly original and outrageously distinctive films united by their uncompromised spirit. This year we will present a new generation of adventurous independent filmmaking, in which boundaries are explored, pushed and often broken. The creative means employed in these films will take audiences on a wild ride towards the future of cinematic storytelling.
Once again the festival this year firmly focuses on indie films from around the globe with over 100 films being screened over the three days of the festival. We will be opening the festival this year with the 50th Anniversary Screening of Hell in the Pacific and we are delighted that the director John Boorman will be along for a Q&A and introduction before the film starts. Another new addition to the festival this year is our mini con. We have a number of vendors attending the festival on the Sunday with a selection of fantastic comic and film related memorabilia.
Our closing film this year is the Irish Premiere of Heroes of the Empire. This film follows the 501st UK Garrison Star Wars™ costuming club
around the UK as they attend a variety of fundraising events - revealing the side of costuming you’ve never seen before. From international film premieres to children’s hospital visits, witness the impact that the UK Garrison (UKG) have on the hearts and minds of the fans they meet. Many people have a misguided perception of costumers, labeling them as “nerds” and“geeks”. In order to change this perception, we were given the privileged opportunity to
meet the families and the fans who have been directly inspired and supported by the UKG. The film will reveal the wide variety of people who are inspired to join the UKG, from all walks of life and occupations. For these individuals, being “Heroes of the Empire” is their true identity. We will also have members of the 501st UK Garrison and Ireland Garrison trooping together on the night
The 9th Underground Cinema Film Festival takes place in the magnificent
